Do you know the new National Construction Code (NCC) J6 changes and what they will mean for your business?

Although the changes came into effect May 1 2019, there has been a 12-month transitional period. Implementation commences May 1 2020, so there is still plenty of time to learn and adapt them to your business.

Why have there been changes?

Section J6 of the NCC has been revised to reach significant increases in energy efficiency and thus the changes aim to reduce greenhouse emissions and decrease building costs.

What are the changes?

  • Track lighting requirements have been simplified
  • Elevator lighting must be switched off after 15 mins
  • Motion detectors must be used to control lighting in the fire stairs/passageways/ramps
  • Illumination Power Density (IPD – watts per square metre required to light a space) allowances have been reduced
